Speciation, Techniques and Facilities for Radioactive Materials at Synchrotron Light Sources

چکیده

We discuss the sources of radionuclides in the environment and summarise the level of radioactive contaminations world-wide. We delineate how X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) can be used in molecular-level environmental radionuclide research and demonstrate the technique’s application on the following three research topics related to contaminations from uranium mining: 1. The structure of a recently discovered aqueous species, Ca2UO2(CO3)3(aq.) was studied by EXAFS and compared to the model systems [UO2(CO3)3](aq.) and Ca2UO2(CO3)3 · 10H2O. 2. EXAFS were used to study the aqueous complexes of U(VI) with a model substance, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (protocatechuic acid; PCS), and 2-hydroxyphenol (catechol; BCT). PCS is produced in flooded uranium mines by hydrothermal and microbial degradation of lignin, an initial wood degradation product. By comparing the results of the PCS complexation with those for BCT, it was established that the U(VI) is bound at low pH to the carboxylic group and at high pH to the hydroxy group(s). 3. A sulphate-reducing bacterial strain of the species Desulfomicrobium baculatum metabolises U(VI). The uranium oxidation state after metabolisation was determined by X-ray absorption near-edge fine structure (XANES) spectroscopy.

Speciation Techniques and Facilities for Radioactive Materials at Synchrotron Light Sources

The chemistry of the actinide family is surprisingly rich. In order to better understand the affinity of specific chelates as in the case of ionic selective recognition or uptake by specific biomolecules, it is essential to better understand the intramolecular interactions. Although this has long been done for widely investigated transition metals, very few studies have been devoted to complexa...

SESSION III Present and Future Synchrotron Facilities for Radionuclide Studies

The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/soft X-ray region of the synchrotron radiation (SR) spectrum has revolutionised the approach to surface materials chemistry/physics. This spectral region has long been recognised for its potential to afford investigations of fundamental actinide science and to provide an improved analytical surface characterisation capabilities for actinide materials. Previously, th...

Speciation Techniques and Facilities for Radioactive Materials at Synchrotron Light Sources: Workshop Proceedings

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are a new class of solvents. Their main interest is related to their “green” properties (non-volatile, non-flammable, etc.), but also from the variability of their physico-chemical properties (stability, hydrophobicity, viscosity) as a function of the RTIL cationic and anionic components. In the frame of the nuclear fuel reprocessing, RTILs are particularl...

Application of Synchrotron Radiation-based Methods for Environmental Biogeochemistry: Introduction to the Special Section.

To understand the biogeochemistry of nutrients and contaminants in environmental media, their speciation and behavior under different conditions and at multiple scales must be determined. Synchrotron radiation-based X-ray techniques allow scientists to elucidate the underlying mechanisms responsible for nutrient and contaminant mobility, bioavailability, and behavior. The continuous improvement...

Industrial Involvement in the Construction of Synchrotron Light Sources

The design, construction and commissioning of a modern third-generation synchrotron light source facility is a major project, costing hundreds of millions of dollars. The delivery of these new facilities, usually on a fixed budget and schedule, requires an effective working relationship with all suppliers providing equipment and services to the project. This paper will examine some of the key i...
